After a wild and unpredictable football season last year for the Florida Gators (and a lot of other teams in the SEC and NCAA), believe it or not, it’s time to start looking at what this fall’s football season will look like for the Gators.
To recap some of last season’s ups and downs – as gently as possible – one of the awesome treasures for the Gators was, and has been, quarterback Tim Tebow. He had a stunning season, but, unfortunately, his talent did not get the support it needed at times. His offense wasn’t helpful or supportive, and the defense continued making too many mistakes to allow the Heisman Trophy-winning Tebow do what he does best.
The Gators have a schedule this year that will allow them to play in the national championship game if they make good use of their power players and connect well both in holding other teams back and getting some good numbers on the scoreboard.
There is no doubt that the Gators have to do much better at supporting Tebow. Here’s a guy who is a Heisman Trophy winner and can’t get enough points on the board because his team hasn’t been able to get their job done. It’s not all the team’s fault. Tebow has a tendency to have a tough time with complicated plays and he leaves himself open to some tough hits by trying to do it all himself. Hopefully, his fall should be different.
If Percy Harvin stays healthy this year, that will make up for a lot. Percy is Tebow’s major target, but with his injuries last season Tebow was at a loss and so was the team. With Harvin being healthy, and able to run – he can beat anyone, anywhere, any time – the Gators will have a much stronger outlook and a much better looking scoreboard.
Then there’s Emmanuel Moody. There are a number of things that he could contribute to the Gators, but he’s untested. His speed is not his strongest attribute, but he can evade and slip out of tackles well. If he keeps his head together, he could add strength to the Gators’ running game.
Louis Murphy could also help the Gators by holding on to passes. His issue with dropped passes was a problem last season. Brandon Spikes has had great speed and a strong physical game, which slows down opponents. If he can help on pass defense, Gators have a real shot at beating everyone in sight.
As for the secondary, last year wasn’t good at all. All there is to say going into the upcoming season is that they need to make good use of their speed and talent. They are good players with a lot to contribute, but they must work hard to pull together and get the job done.
Gator fans should be looking forward to the upcoming football season. With the team and its power players, the Gators should be winning all the way to the national championships.
